Pluralism in Odissi: Styles and Aesthetics

Virtual Conference

May 25, 2022 – May 27, 2022

Pluralism in Odissi: Styles and Aesthetics will focus on pluralism in the tradition, transition, and transformation of Odissi from an eastern Indian dance form to a global spectacle. The Odissi Path Finder published by the Odissi Research Centre in Bhubaneswar, India featured three styles: Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, Guru Debaprasad Das, and Guru Pankaj Charan Das. However, there have been varying degrees of marginalization in the field that still lacks an understanding of the technical features and stylistic difference. This event will feature marginalized voices, especially from Guru Mayadhar Raut, Guru Surendranath Jena, and Guru Hari Krishna Behera styles of Odissi.

Shaping S-Curves 2021

What is choreography in Odissi? How does one approach creativity in this eastern Indian dance form that is embedded within curvilinear principles? What is the purpose of the Odissi aesthetic? This event focuses on describing the heterogeneity among the choreographic principles used in Odissi. This art form has historical and contemporary lives in concert practice and in cultural festivals. Focusing on solo/group works, percussive/expressive idioms, religious/spiritual foci, transnational/diasporic performances, as well as political/contemporary interpretations, this conference presents a snapshot of the aesthetic potential in the field of Odissi. Sensate Technicities 2019

Dance connects communities, bringing people together, who move and sweat alongside one other towards a sense of embodied nourishment. This conference hopes to bring multiple communities of practice in conversation with one another. Ranging from South Asian classical form called Odissi to Afro-Brazilian Modern dance technique Silvestre, this symposium opens up the lecture-halls and dance-studios of UNCC campus to the community at large. While scholars in disciplines across dance studies, architecture, digital humanities, computer science, and anthropology will present their work, practitioners will bring their crafts to wider audiences through concert shows, performances, and master-classes.
